The Northern California Experimental Firing Group [NCEFG] fire pottery based on archaeological models.

Formed in 2003, the NCEFG meets during the summer on the Bolinas peninsula, on the Pacific coast of Northern California. They make pots and fire them in a wood burning up draught kiln. Future plans include experimentation with pit and trench firings.

The NCEFG aims to gain greater understanding of pottery manufacture in the past and to make beautiful pots.

The NCEFG publishes an academic Bulletin with details of its activities, field reports, and additional papers concerning related experimental archaeological research and discoveries.

The NCEFG welcomes archaeologists, potters, technologists, handy folk, and all other interested parties.  However, all participation is free, gratefully accepted, and at volunteer's own risk.

The Northern California Firing Groups' 5th Season, Summer 2007, has ended. We will not be having a firing in 2008.

We had a moderately sucessfull single firing in 2007 (our first try) and an excellent glaze firing.

Thanks to all who participated in 2007! Fleld notes have not yet been posted. When they are you will find them here. Keep an eye open for Bulletin 4 detailing 2006 - at the presses right now, and Bulletin 5 detailing 2007! We have been given a firm November 1 deadline for all updates so... Notification of site updates will be posted to te NCEFG's blog.

Bulletin 3 is ready for download here.

The NCEFG gratefully accepts donations via PayPal to staff@ncefg.org.
